La vie n'est qu'une succession de choix, bon ou mauvais, ils définissent tous ce que l'on est, devient ou risque de devenir. Jon Osterman a longtemps été un scientifique dont les qualités étaient reconnues dans le domaine du nucléaire. Lors d'un accident dans un canon à particules, il devint celui que le monde entier surnommera le Dr. Manhattan, un être à la peau bleutée et aux pouvoirs incommensurables. Mais que ce serait-il passé si enfant ou même adulte, il avait effectué des choix différents ? Devenu l'égal d'un Dieu, il imagine alors les possibilités qui auraient pu s'offrir à lui. A l'heure où il assiste à l'enterrement de son père, il se remémore la fois où il lui offrit un cadeau, une boîte dont le contenu restait mystérieux. Que pouvait-il bien y avoir à l'intérieur. Qu'en aurait-il été si il y avait eu d'autres choses ? Jon se rappelle aussi ce jour où il assista à la première réunion des Vigilants et au tirage au sort déterminant les tandems. A cette époque, son regard portait sur Laurie, alias le Spectre Soyeux. Pourtant, le tirage au sort lui attribuait un certain Rorschach...

Jon retourne dans le New Jersey voir de vieux copains d’université. Janey l’accompagne. Ils tuent le temps dans une fête foraine. Un photographe les prend pour des amoureux et les prend en photo. Le bracelet de la montre de Janey se rompt. Un gros homme marche dessus, mais Jon dit qu’il peut la réparer. Jon et Janey passent la nuit dans un hôtel et font l’amour pour la première fois.
