Scénariste pour la télévision (Jeremiah) et le cinéma (L’Echange de Clint Eastwood), Joe Michael Straczynski (JMS pour ses admirateurs) crée et anime, entre 1993 et 1998,la série TV Babylon 5, saga de science-fiction dont il écrit 92 des 110 épisodes. Par la suite, il se lance dans le comic-book avec une série originale, Rising Stars (chez Top Cow), suivie de Midnight Nation, avec Gary Frank. Joe Quesada le recrute pour relancer Spider-Man, personnage dont il assurera les destinées de 2001 à 2007. Durant ce long run, il écrit également des reprises de personnages classiques comme Dr Strange ou les Quatre Fantastiques, ou bien plus obscurs comme Supreme Power ou The Twelve. Il passe ensuite chez DC pour qui il reprend The Brave and the Bold, Superman et Wonder Woman. Pour ces deux derniers personnages, il développe des intrigues confiées à d’autres scénaristes, préférant se consacrer à la ligne de graphic novels Superman : Earth-One.
