Bart Dormann est le parrain choisi par Jonathan Mac Lane, alias Jonathan Fly, pour veiller sur l’héritier de la Troisième Branche : Jason Mac Lane, notre XIII. En effet, Jonathan Mac Lane a été le chef de la Troisième Branche. Sachant que ses orientations politiques ne lui laisseraient probablement pas la possibilité d’accompagner son fils adoptif jusqu’à ses 21 ans, il a choisi un homme de confiance, Bart Dormann, son compagnon de cellule, pour veiller sur son pupille. C’est donc Bart Dormann qui réalise à chaque Thanksgiving et avec l’aide de Trois-Sources l’éducation de Jason entre ses 11 ans et son départ pour Cuba à la fin de ses études à la Boulder University. Il demande à Jason sous serment de protéger les documents de la Troisième Branche.
