Tom apparaît d'abord comme passager clandestin à bord du bateau qui amène Tintin en Afrique. Il appartient en fait à une organisation dirigée depuis Chicago par Al Capone. Il est sous les ordres directs de Gibbons, qui lui ordonne d'éliminer Tintin. Il fait plusieurs tentatives, aidé notamment par Muganga, sorcier des Babaoro'm. Mais il échoue et périt dévoré par les crocodiles.
