Une machine, une ressource ou un service peuvent être contactés au travers du réseau par leur adresse IP. Mais il n'est pas toujours évident de retenir ce type d'adresses, alors que des noms sont plus facilement mémorisables.

A cet effet, plusieurs mécanismes nous proposent de réaliser les conversions entre les adresses IP et les noms. Nous parlerons alors de mécanismes de résolution de noms.

Nom | Explications |
DNS | Conversions entre un nom DNS (255 caractères) et une adresse IP.
Système hiérarchique. |
WINS | Conversions entre un nom NetBios (15 caractères) et une adresse IP.
Système non hiérarchique, ou plat (flat namespace). |
HOST | |
LMHOST | Conversions entre un nom NetBios et une adresse IP. |
Broadcast | Diffusion dans tout le segment du réseau. |

DNS et WINS sont des services.

HOST et LMHOST sont des fichiers, qui sous Windows 2000 sont situés dans : Windows\System32\drivers\etc\
