On rencontre le moine gris, en fait le légat du pape, dans L’astrologue de Bruges, en 1545. Il enlèvera la jeune Mieke_, parce que son oncle avait imprimé des textes interdits et que celle-ci les avait distribués dans la ville, mais acceptera finalement, non sans menace, de la relâcher.
