Mathias est l’oncle de Mieke, ou plutôt le second mari de sa défunte tante. Il commerce en secret avec Zacharius et prétend qu’il est au service du Diable, tout comme son protégé, le peintre Van Laet. Il cache en effet des objets dans son blé, comme une croix en or, quand il n’imprime pas des textes interdits que Mieke_ distribue dans la ville. Lorsque celle-ci est arrêtée, il fuit vers les provinces du nord, abandonnant sa maison et laissant Mieke livrée à elle-même.
