Balky semble être le dirigeant du centre de surveillance vers lequel Khâny emmène les Terriens pour visionner l’enregistrement de la sonde qui a manqué de les percuter (La forge de Vulcain). Ce centre est situé sur la plus haute montagne de Vinéa et renferme un canon qui empêche toute intrusion dans l’hémisphère nord de la planète. Balky reçoit froidement Khâny à son arrivée, mais lui fournit néanmoins les renseignements qu’elle désire.
