Caleb, Mézoké et Dernid entendent enfin le message de leur vaisseau Névronome, Angus. Ses congénères n'ont pas volontairement implosé, détruisant plusieurs cités de la Confédération : ils sont eux-mêmes victimes d'un tueur inconnu. Pour obliger les dirigeants confédérés à les aider, les vaisseaux se sont placés à proximité des métropoles surpeuplées, un ultima-tum mortel. Orbital charge les quatre compagnons de traquer l'entité dévastatrice sur la planète d'origine des Névronomes et de la faire disparaître…
