Poursuivi par des patibulaires qui ont l'air de vouloir lui faire la peau, Lapinot atterrit à Blacktown : son saloon, sa prison, ses 150 bouseux managés par un shérif mal luné qui sort son "dictionnaire des sales types" dès qu'il flaire un étranger. Pour tout arranger, le patelin est en pleine émeute car on vient de trouver de l'or dans les collines. Ce qui fait qu'au bout d'un quart d'heure, Lapinot est mûr pour le lynchage.
