A peine Lefranc a-t-il déposé son ami Jeanjean dans le train pour qu'il rejoigne son oncle, le professeur Le Gall, qu'il apprend que ce dernier et le jeune garçon courent un grand danger. Malgré une course-poursuite avec les kidnappeurs, le journaliste ne pourra empêcher l'enlèvement de Jeanjean. Mais Lefranc tient une piste qui le conduit au Mont-Saint-Michel et semble impliquer une puissante compagnie pétrolière. Lefranc sera aidé par de mystérieux amis, mais Arnold Fisher, le magnat du pétrole, fera appel à Axel Borg pour mettre la main sur le scientifique dont l'invention fait vasciller l'équilibre de l'économie mondiale. Dans un climat de tension internationale, Lefranc luttera de vitesse avec Fisher, Borg et le gouvernement français pour retrouver le savant et son neveu.
