Printemps 1963, Lefranc se rend à Alméria en Espagne pour les vacances. Seulement quelques semaines plus tôt, le journaliste, aidé de l'inspecteur Renard, résout un vieux mystère familial : la disparition en 1938 d'Antoine Lefranc, l'oncle de Guy, durant la guerre civile espagnole. Mais grâce aux investigations de l'inspecteur, Guy sait désormais que son oncle est mort accidentellement en Espagne en 1946, laissant derrière lui une veuve et un enfant. Lefranc part faire la connaissance d'Inès de la Serna, la femme de son oncle, et de sa fille Soledad. Mais à peine arrivé, Lefranc est confronté à un drame : deux avions militaires américains viennent d'entrer en collision et ont explosé en plein vol. Des tonnes de débris métalliques retombent au sol. Et parmi ces débris, quatre bombes H. En quelques minutes, la région d'Alméria est plongée en pleine catastrophe nucléaire…
