Vienne, hiver 1768. Jeanne-Sophie de Sambre a réussi son pari : faire croire à sa fille Charlotte qu'elle a séduit Werner von Gotha, l'orphelin aux yeux rouges, dont elle était tombée amoureuse. Blessée, Charlotte décide d'entrer au couvent. Werner, mortifié, incrédule devant tant de perversité, se flagelle jusqu'au sang devant la statue de la vierge, quitte à en mourir… Pour les deux adolescents, l'hiver est aussi entré dans leur cœur…
