Ce Britannique débute dans les années 70 et collabore à de nombreuses séries. C'est en 86 que Dave Gibbons s'associe à Allan Moore pour créer Watchmen chez D.C. Comics. De 90 à 91, il dessine Give Me Liberty sur un scénario de Frank Miller. Par la suite, il reprend Rogue Trooper et entreprend un scénario de Batman avec les frères Kubert. Méconnu jusqu'au milieu des années 80, il emporte l'adhésion d'un large public à travers les Watchmen.
