Two years earlier during Judith's going-away party, Patricia had told her she hoped she would never return. Gilbert had been Patrica's fiance, but had told her he wanted to marry Judith. Now Judith returns to Hauteville after receiving a letter from Patrica saying she had forgiven her. When Judith arrives, Patricia introduces her to her new fiance, but Judith and Xavier are immediately attracted to one another. Now trusting Judith completely, Patricia insists that Xavier and Judith go skating while she has a headache.
