Gertrude's family could not afford to pay for her to go the university, but her hard work gets her a scholarship. Attending the university seems like a dream to her, but she refuses to mix with the other students due to her shyness and social status. She finally makes a friend and when she is introduced to her friend's brother, they start going out together. When she overhears her friend talking about how shy she is, Gertrude snaps and vows not to be shy anymore. She joins the hippies protesting the war, but soon discovers they don't share her old-fashioned values.
