Viviane gets a job as an assistant for a theatrical production. She and the lead actor fall in love, much to the displeasure of his co-star. One evening, while getting some fresh air near the docks, she falls in the water and the current starts to sweep her out to sea. A fisherman friend risks his life to save her and they end up on his uncle's boat. There she learns that his strange beliefs include the idea that if you save a life, then that life belongs to you and he believes she is now his wife.
