En rentrant chez lui, Edgar aperçoit par hasard Marie couchée dans l’herbe, en partie dévêtue, en plein ébats avec David. Il entend Marie dire à David qu’elle a piégé Edgar pour lui coller la honte devant tout le monde.
Comprenant qu’il a été manipulé, furieux, Jacobi fait semblant d’avoir besoin de l’aide de David pour un tour de magie, l’enferme dans une boîte, puis le perfore à travers de la boîte de multiples coups d’épée rageurs et sauvages. Il déplace ensuite le cadavre ensanglanté de David pour le placer dans le lit de Marie, endormie. lorsqu’elle se réveille, elle découvre le corps sans vie de son amoureux baignant dans le sang. Cet évènement la rend folle et elle passe ensuite dix ans dans un asile.
Edgar s’enfuit à bord d’un train de marchandises en destination de Chicago.
