Une équipe de huit biologistes marins travaillent sur le recensement des espèces animales au large des îles Maranelles pour le catalogue. Un matin, tous les poissons ont disparu. Le radar signale la présence de quelque chose de gigantesque qui s’approche sous l’eau de leur navire. Il s’agit d’une structure complexe immense, d’une matière blanchâtre comme du cartilage.
Une excroissance se met à pousser en direction des scientifiques, avec un nombre de petits globules translucides identique au nombre des membres du groupe. Chaque biologiste, comme hypnotisé, avale un globe.
