Milieu de l’année 1980 - Ronald James Randall, le tueur en série connu sous le nom de Barde (The Bard), fait face à un procès après avoir attendu trois ans. Bien que sa victime survivante, Nancy, témoigne contre lui, l’accusation bâcle injustement l’affaire et le jury l’acquitte. Nancy quitte la ville, effrayée, et Rorschach jure de traduire Randall en justice.
