Jaunjelgava (avant 1919 : Friedrichstadt) est une ville de Lettonie

Elle a 2 245 habitants pour une superficie de 5,1 km2. Elle constitue le siège et le centre du novads qui porte son nom. Elle se situe en Sémigalie, dans la région historique de Sélonie.

Toponyme

Le nom de la ville signifie "Nouvelle-Jelgava" et a été nommée par rapport à la ville de Jelgava qui fut la capitale du Duché de Courlande.

Son nom en allemand était Friedrichstadt et elle était connue sous cette appellation dans l'Empire russe.

En letton, le nom de Jaunjelgava a changé plusieurs fois. Il a été appelé Sērens (XIIIe siècle), Jaunpilsēta (Nouvelle ville, XVIe siècle), Jelgaviņa (la petite Jelgava) ou Jaun Jelgava (la nouvelle Jelgava) (XVIIe – XIXe siècles). 

Partie de la Zone de Résidence, la ville dénombrait une population juive importante qui la connaissait sous le nom de "Nouvelle-Riga" ou Nairi (abréviation du yiddish Nai Riga ).
