Alors qu'il chassait dans le nord du Maine, un ancien combattant à la retraite découvre le cadavre d'une femme et une importante somme d'argent à côté de son corps. Son existence va se retrouver bouleversée par ces découvertes. En effet, des criminels à la recherche de l'argent le rencontrent. Le vétéran de guerre ne le sait pas encore mais les malfrats lui concoctent un test de survie.
