Philip Gillespie est gouverneur de l’Arizona de 1978 à 1987. Il est candidat aux primaires démocrates pour l’élection présidentielle en 1988 face à William Sheridan, Michael Dukakis, Al Gore et Jesse Jackson. Durant le mandat de Sheridan, son nom est cité par deux fois pour remplacer un juge de la cour suprême des États-Unis. Condamné à 30 ans d’emprisonnement.
