Atticus Freeman, vétéran et passionné de pulp-fiction, voyage de Jim Crow South à sa ville natale du sud de Chicago à la recherche de son père disparu, Montrose. Après avoir recruté son oncle George et son amie d'enfance Letitia pour le rejoindre, le trio part pour «Ardham», MA, où ils pensent que Montrose est peut-être allé chercher un aperçu de l'ascendance de la défunte mère d'Atticus. Alors qu'ils traversent le Midwest, Tic, Leti et George rencontrent des dangers à chaque tournant, en particulier après le coucher du soleil.
