La couche application du modèle OSI
La couche application constitue une interface fournissant des services réseau (sans savoir comment sont traités ces services dans les couches inférieures) aux applications de l'utilisateur.
Elle se distingue donc des autres couches en ce qu'elle ne fournit pas de services aux autres couches, mais seulement aux processus d'application (navigateur, logiciel de messagerie, FTP, chat, etc.) à l'extérieur du modèle OSI.
La couche application synchronise les applications coopératives et établit une entente sur les procédures de reprise en cas d'incident, et de contrôle de l'intégrité des données. Elle est également à même de déterminer si les ressources sont suffisantes pour la communication prévue.
