Version grand public de l'opteron, il est basé sur la technologie "hammer" 64-bit x86-64. Compatible 16 et 32 bits, il n'exploitera sa puissance complètement qu'avec des applications dédiées 64bits. Linux et BSD sont déjà compatibles 64bits, et une version de windows XP 64 bits est en préparation chez Microsoft et devrait sortir dans les semaines à venir.

A L'instar des Athlons XP-M, le 64 comporte une gestion automatique de l'énergie suivant la charge, réduisant automatiquement son voltage et sa fréquence en périodes d'inactivité, réduisant sa consommation (et aussi son dégagement de chaleur) à moins de 35W alors qu'il consomme d'ordinaire 89W en utilisation.

Le core Newcastle

Le core Newcastle est apparu pour permettre à AMD de proposer des Athlon 64 à des prix plus raisonnables, du moins sur socket 754. En effet, ce core Newcastle se différenciait du Clawhammer par le passage du cache de niveau 2 de 1024 à 512 Ko. Pour le reste on retrouve une finesse de gravure en 0.13µ et les instructions SSE, SSE2, MMX, 3DNow et x86-64. Ce core Newcastle a été décliné en diverses versions de 1.8 à 2.4 GHz aussi bien sur socket 754 que 939 :

  • Athlon 64 2800+ 1.8 GHz socket 754
  • Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0 GHz socket 754
  • Athlon 64 3200+ 2.2 GHz socket 754
  • Athlon 64 3400+ 2.4 GHz socket 754
