Pompaelo
D'origine romaine, Pompaelo aurait été fondée vers 75 av. J.-C. par Pompée qui lui aurait donné son nom. Elle fut occupée par les Wisigoths en 476. Au viiie siècle, les Maures occupent la ville. Ils en sont chassés en 778 avec l'aide des troupes de Charlemagne qui profite de la faiblesse de ses alliés pour démanteler leurs remparts. Pour se venger, les Vascons contribuent à l'écrasement de l'arrière-garde des armées impériales au col de Roncevaux lors de la bataille de Roncevaux. Le royaume de Pampelune, constitué en 905, fut le noyau de celui de Navarre.
