Chail: Chail est une ancienne commune du centre-ouest de la France située dans le département des Deux-Sèvres en région Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Ses habitants sont appelés les Chaillois.

L'étymologie de Chail est composée du même radical, très ancien *kal-, que caillou, voir Chaille, chail en ancien français, qui signifie « pierre », « rocher ». Toponyme apparenté à Chail, Chaillevette, avec le sens de « lieu caillouteux, pierreux ».

Histoire

Le 1^er janvier 2019, Chail est regroupée à Sompt pour former la commune nouvelle de Fontivillié dont la création est actée par un arrêté préfectoral du 21 août 2018.
