Deux aristocrates brillants et spirituels, la marquise de Merteuil et le séduisant Vicomte de Valmont, signent un pacte d'inviolable amitié à la fin de leur liaison. C'est au nom de celui-ci que la marquise demande à Valmont de séduire la candide Cécile de Volanges qui doit prochainement épouser son ex-favori, M. de Bastide. Mais Valmont a entrepris de séduire la vertueuse Mme de Tourvel.
