Traumatisé par la disparition de sa sœur Julie voici 22 ans, Peter a quitté Valan, sa ville natale, pour la métropole voisine où il a intégré une brigade d'inspecteurs spécialisée dans les disparitions. Lorsque le corps congelé d'une jeune fille est retrouvé à Valan, le passé de Peter resurgit. Persuadé qu'il s'agit de Julie, il retourne là-bas, et découvre qu'une autre adolescente est portée disparue. Contraint de réveiller les démons endormis et d'affronter la pègre locale, il se plonge alors dans une enquête qui le confrontera à l'impensable : tous les ans depuis vingt ans, une jeune fille disparaît la veille de Noël…
