Au XVIIe siècle, malgré l'interdiction de sa mère, le jeune Hajo s'engage avec son ami Rolf sur un vaisseau de la Compagnie néerlandaise des Indes orientales. Quant à Padde, c'est un peu contre son gré qu'il se retrouve embarqué dans cette aventure. Ces nouveaux membres d'équipages sont mis à l'épreuve par leurs compagnons, mais ils apprennent vite. Une explosion à bord provoque le naufrage du bateau. Les trois jeunes marins traverseront bien des péripéties avant de regagner enfin la Hollande.
