En 1852, Violette est en âge de se marier quand son village de montagne est brutalement privé de tous ses hommes suite à la répression des Républicains organisée par Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte. Les mois passent dans un isolement total. Désespérées de revoir un jour leurs hommes, les femmes font un serment : si un homme vient, il sera celui de toutes, afin que la vie continue dans le ventre de chacune.
