A la mort de son père, victime avec sa femme de l'accident de son avion personnel alors qu'il survolait les Alpes, Bart Cordell hérite d'un empire industriel et d'un hebdomadaire à fort tirage : "Le Globe". Vivant aux États-Unis depuis dix ans, Cordell contrecarre dès son arrivée en Europe l'image de play-boy mondain qu'ont donné de lui les magazines en s'imposant par une autorité et une compétence inattendue. Aussitôt, il devient l'homme du jour, instaure un nouveau ton et des rapports plus directs entre lui et ses employés, gérant sa fortune grâce à l'aide de son conseiller privé David Lowenstein. Pressentant une vaste conjuration contre son groupe par de puissantes puissances industrielles européennes, Cordell engage un détective afin d'enquêter sur les circonstances de la mort de son père, et fait protéger sa femme Giovanella et son fils demeurés aux États-Unis.
Les parents sont fortement invités à surveiller les enfants de moins de 13 ans
