Alliant prises de vues réelles et animation, L'appel de la forêt raconte l'histoire de Buck, un chien au grand cœur, dont la paisible vie domestique bascule lorsqu'il est brusquement arraché de sa maison en Californie et se retrouve enrôlé comme chien de traineau dans les étendues sauvages du Yukon en Alaska, pendant la ruée vers l'or, dans les années 1890. Buck va devoir s'adapter et lutter pour survivre, jusqu'à finalement vivre l'aventure de sa vie et trouver sa véritable place dans le monde en devenant son propre maître…
