L'été touche à sa fin. Keith Reynolds, un professeur de musique, songe avec nostalgie à son passé d'artiste en devenir dans les rues de New York. Sa femme Megan et leur fille Lauren sont quant à elles en pleine effervescence à l'approche de la rentrée en terminale de la jeune fille. Keith ne semble pas partager leur enthousiasme, trouvant son seul échappatoire lors des soirées où il joue du violoncelle dans un prestigieux orchestre symphonique de Manhattan. Lorsque Megan décide d'accueillir chez eux Sophie, une lycéenne anglaise, dans le cadre d'un programme d'échange scolaire, Keith voit resurgir un aspect refoulé de sa personnalité au contact de la jeune fille…
