Eté 1938. Normandie. France.

Gavin, un jeune américain passe des vacances en famille à Vierville, l'endroit où a grandi sa mère. Là, il va faire la connaissance de Joanne avec qui il va vivre son premier amour.

Mais à la fin de l'été, il doit retourner chez lui, en Amérique et laisser Joanne. Ils se promettent de s'écrire et de ne pas s'oublier. 1939. C'est la guerre. Avril 1944. La milice tue par erreur le père de Joanne et la blesse . Cette dernière rejoint la Résistance où elle sera messagère avec son amie Violette. Mais cela risque d'être dangereux.

Une patrouille allemande trouve d'ailleurs le cadavre d'une jeune fille à côté d'un vélo sur le bord de la route.

Le 5 juin, Gavin, qui s'est engagé dans l'armée US, a embarqué sur des navires pour participer au débarquement sur les plages normandes. Il espère ainsi retrouver Joanne.
