SGML
Angl : Standard Generalized Markup Language.

SGML est un Meta langage existant depuis 1986.
Standardisé sous l'appellation ISO 8879, il permet la définition de langages de structuration (balisage) à l'aide des dtd (Document Type Definitions), utilisées dans l'échange de documents électroniques, la gestion documentaire, et la publication de documents.
Le langage SGML est considéré comme stable, souple, et riche en fonctionnalités, mais sa complexité a entraîné la naissance d'un nouveau langage, variante réduite, sous le nom XML (Extensible Markup Language).
HTML est un exemple de langage défini par SGML.
