- Procédé de transformation des variations d'amplitude (ou de la valeur instantanée) d'un signal analogique en nombres binaires.
Le chiffre associé à une valeur sera toujours ajusté à la valeur la plus proche. Cette approximation est appelée « erreur de quantification ». Plus le système a une quantification élevée, moins l'erreur de quantification sera importante.
La quantification est donc directement proportionnelle au nombre de chiffres compris dans son expression binaire. À chaque chiffre correspond une augmentation de 6 dB. Ainsi un système à huit bit possède une résolution de 48 dB. Pour l'audio professionnel, une valeur de 96 dB (soit 16 bits) a été adoptée. Le procédé de conversion d'une valeur analogique en valeur numérique est cependant basé sur une approximation, puisque le nombre de valeurs numériques possibles pour une quantification donnée est fini (valeurs discrètes).
