Aux fréquence très basses, le champ électrique et le champ magnétique sont considérés séparément. Aux fréquences élevées, le champ électrique et le champ magnétique sont indissociables et sont repris soit sous le terme global "onde électromagnétique" soit sous l'appellation "champs électromagnétiques".
Toute onde électromagnétique est caractérisée par deux paramètres : sa fréquence et sa longueur d'onde.
