- ISO travaille au nouveau standard MPEG-4 en se basant notamment sur QuickTime, ce standard en stade de finalisation devrait réunir Web et télévision en intégrant des contenus provenant de ces deux médias.
MPEG-4 est basé sur MPEG-2 pour la partie vidéo, il offre en plus la possibilité de décrire des scènes interactives 2D avec MHEG, il permet de définir des scènes 3D via VRML et de les gérer sous un format binaire de scène le BIFS, l'interface de programmation EAI doit permettre de communiquer avec un scène depuis une application Java, le protection des auteurs se fera avec IPR, une descriptions textuelles des modules transférés est prévue sous le nom de OCI, la gestion du réseau et des terminaux se fera avec l'interface de connexion DMIF.
