Angl : Global System for Mobile communication.

Réseau radio cellulaire numérique conçu par la CETP en 1982 mais les premiers réseaux et mobiles ne sont apparus, respectivement, qu'en 1991 et 1992, il bénéficie d'une standardisation internationale qui lui a permis une bonne couverture aussi bien en europe que sur les autres continents. LE GSM utilise un dérivé du amrt (Time Division Multiple Access), le multiplexage temporel, utilisant huit tranches (time slots).
En outre, le GSM utilise une technique de commutation de réseau, c'est à dire que lorsque la communication est établie, un canal complet est utilisé pour maintenir la liaison et ce pendant toute la durée de la communication téléphonique, qu'il y ait des sons à transmettre ou pas.
