GPU
La carte graphique possède son propre processeur, le GPU (Graphical Processing Unit), qui est chargé du traitement de l’affichage, de la manipulation des données graphiques, et de la gestion de la mémoire nécessaire. Sa charge de travail varie en fonction de la résolution désirée sur le périphérique (écran, téléviseur, etc.), et de la profondeur de codage. Le traitement des images 3D et la décompression Mpeg sont des tâches qui requièrent beaucoup de ressources GPU, au contraire des applications bureautiques.
Parmi les fabricants de processeurs graphiques, nous pouvons remarquer nVIDIA, ATI, Matrox, 3DLabs, Intel et XGI.
Comme les processeurs graphiques actuels ont un dégagement de chaleur important, ils sont munis d'un dissipateur thermique (radiateur) surmonté le plus souvent par un ventilateur.
