Terme inventé par Benoît Mandelbrot, chercheur au centre de recherche Thomas J. Watson d’IBM en 1975 lors de la mise au point de la théorie mathématique sur les fractales, qui décrit une classe d’objets de formes irrégulières qui semblent toujours représenter un motif régulier.
Algorithme de compression avec perte d’information. Utilisé pour les formats de fichiers .FIF.
