Ensemble matériel et/ou logiciel qui assure par filtrage le contrôle des informations circulant entre un réseau privé (lan, par exemple) ou une station de travail, et un réseau public (réseau Internet, par exemple) ainsi qu’à prévenir toute tentative d’accès non autorisé de la part d’un utilisateur d’un réseau public. Ce dispositif de filtrage se situe au niveau de la couche 4 (couche transport) du modèle de référence OSI.
