Mesure relative du volume sonore.

Unité de mesure de l'intensité acoustique définie par Graham Bell, l'inventeur du téléphone. L'unité de base est le "bel" mais on utilise plus couramment son dixième: le décibel.

Quelques niveaux :
  • Une conversation entre deux personnes atteint entre 20 et 35 décibels.
  • Un marteau-piqueur et ses 90 décibels deviennent pénibles.
  • à 120 décibels (le décollage d'un avion) le bruit est insupportable
  • à partir de 180, le son peut tuer.

Un décret du 15 décembre 1998 limite désormais à 105 Db le niveau sonore dans les lieux diffusant de la musique (discothèques, salles de concert) et à 100 Db la puissance des baladeurs.
