Réseau informatique développé par le ministère de la Défense (DOD ou Department of Defense) aux États-Unis à la fin des années soixante (1969) pour permettre l’échange d’informations entre les universités américaines et les agences de recherche gouvernementales. Ancêtre de l’Internet, ce réseau démantelé en 1990, était doté d’une architecture de commutation de paquets dont les ordinateurs étaient interconnectés par liaisons spécialisées.
