The electricity production was put to stop in 2001, and the production of steam and hot water for district heating belonged now to the past, after the build of a new powerplant. A small active part of this almost untouched power station still gives everyday power to some surrounded industries. Since part of the power plant is always active, there are guards and blue-collar workers who work in this place. So the buildings are relatively protected from human degradations. Thus, ECVB (AKA CEFB for Centrales Électriques des Flandres et du Brabant) is a fairly unique in terms of abandoned industry. However, recently copper thieves are there and destroy this splendid place. … to the present time Until now, the only damage here is the result of nature’s efforts to reclaim its territory. Moss infected the turbines and machinery, plants and grass grew from edges of the rusty metalwork. There are turbines, exhaust pipes, gauges, control rooms, pretty much everything you would expect for an industry urbex. The boilers, turbines, electrical systems and the equipment are still more or less intact, preserved. Besides some rust and peeling paint the station is covered with dust and asbestos. It is enough to a very small effort of imagination to see the blue-collar workers working in this old power plant. A unique feeling I particularly like these places haunted by gigantic rusted metal monsters which lead us in the post-apocalyptic universe of comic-strip of Simon Dufleuve or games such as imaginary landscapes Fallout3 or Resident Evil.

When the user is in danger or critical health level, a single green herb by itself will be much more effective than it would be otherwise sending the user back to Yellow Caution. Location: Square 18 septemberplein About the project: Originally from Poland but since 1977 a resident of the united states Krzysztof Wodiczko has become famous for his socially engaged and politically charged work. Since the eighties, he has realized numerous projects in public space. With his art he wants to increase people’s awareness of the social conditions in their immediate environment and to contribute to the political debate. During GLOW he presents War Veteran Vehicle, a military vehicle that has served in war zones for the Dutch army, now driving through the streets of Eindhoven. It is equipped with a projector that fires words on the facades of the 18 September Square, accompanied by sounds. The projected images are quotes from national and local war veterans and their families. They explain why the transition from the battlefield to a civilian life has been difficult for them. With his work Wodiczko hopes that people will open their eyes for the traumatic effects military missions could cause. He offers war veterans and their families the opportunity to speak out in public and to share their experiences. At the same time he focuses on the personal problems of veterans in their own environment. From Glow 2011 website.

Location: Market Square About the project: In collaboration with CultuurStation, the mediator between culture and education in Eindhoven, students of primary schools in Eindhoven and its environs were invited to design their own light. The response was overwhelming. About thousand students showed their creativity and decorated their own lampshades. The required lights were provided by the Lichtjesroute Eindhoven. Volunteers from the Scouting Dr. Albert Schweitzer helped to connect and install the creations. The result is a great piece of artwork that seems to float above the Market Square. An event like GLOW is an excellent opportunity to make children aware of the importance of renewable energy. Therefore the Environmental Education Center (MEC) gladly joined this initiative. With special education material of the MEC, teachers focused on smart and responsible use of light From Glow 2011 website.

Location: TU/e en Kennispoort About the project: On the TU/e campus and surrounding area lighting designer Michel Suk fully lightens different buildings and landscape elements. Large-scale installations slowly change color or reveal patterns which alternately show chaos and order. Because the light programs are linked together, the overall view is impressive. Visitors walk through a landscape of light and color in which vistas and sight lines continuously cause other images. To mark the 120 year anniversary of Philips the concern supports this project of Michel Suk. His work seamlessly connect to the Philips theme of ‘Livable Cities’. Absolute eye-catcher in this large installation is the building of Kennispoort. This is the scenery for a co-production of Michel Suk and composer Bart van Dongen. Accompanied by a wind instruments ensemble and electronics a choir of 150 to 200 singers performs a new composition by Bart van Dongen. By using projections Michel Suk provides for a powerful visual counterweight. Because Van Dongen and Suk have worked together from the start lighting and sound are integrated beautifully. Both images and music of Beauty of stagnation are based on the Fibonacci number sequence, which describes growth processes in nature. In both media small entities accumulate to large and complex constructions. For example the projection of a line develops into a tree structure or a color into a fine mosaic. The words and sounds of the music composition evolve gradually into extensive rhythms and tunes. From Glow 2011 website.

  • Istanbul, Basilica Cistern
    https://www.gaudry.be > Photo > Galerie
[92] 20/02/2012 - Dernière modification le 05/10/2019 The Basilica Cistern (Turkish: Yerebatan Sarayı - "Sunken Palace", or Yerebatan Sarnıcı - "Sunken Cistern"), is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul (formerly Constantinople), Turkey. The cistern, located 500 feet (150 m) southwest of the Hagia Sophia on the historical peninsula of Sarayburnu, was built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. History The name of this subterranean structure derives from a large public square on the First Hill of Constantinople, the Stoa Basilica, beneath which it was originally constructed. Before being converted to a cistern, a great Basilica stood in its place, built between the 3rd and 4th centuries during the Early Roman Age as a commercial, legal and artistic centre. The basilica was reconstructed by Ilius after a fire in 476. Ancient texts indicated that the basilica contained gardens, surrounded by a colonnade and facing the Church of Hagia Sophia According to ancient historians, Emperor Constantine built a structure that was later rebuilt and enlarged by Emperor Justinian after the Nika riots of 532, which devastated the city. Historical texts claim that 7,000 slaves were involved in the construction of the cistern. The enlarged cistern provided a water filtration system for the Great Palace of Constantinople and other buildings on the First Hill, and continued to provide water to the Topkapı Palace after the Ottoman conquest in 1453 and into modern times. In media The cistern was used as a location for the 1963 James Bond film From Russia with Love. In the film, it is referred to as being constructed by the Emperor Constantine, with no reference to Justinian. Its location is a considerable distance from the Soviet (now Russian) consulate, which is located in Beyoğlu, the "newer" European section of Istanbul, on the other side of the Golden Horn. The finale of the 2009 film The International takes place in a fantasy amalgam of the Old City, depicting the Basilica Cistern as lying beneath the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, which, in the film, is directly adjacent to the Süleymaniye Mosque. In the 2011 video game, Assassin's Creed: Revelations, the player controlled character, Ezio Auditore, is given the chance to explore a section of this cistern in a memory sequence entitled The Yerebatan Cistern. [95] 21/02/2012 - Dernière modification le 04/10/2019 The MV Savarona (also sometimes M/Y, for motor yacht) is a luxury State yacht. She was the largest in the world when launched in 1931, and remains with a length of 136 m (446 ft) one of the world’s longest. She is owned by the Republic of Turkey and is currently leased by Turkish businessman Kahraman Sadıkoğlu from the Turkish State. Vessel's Details: Year Built: 1931 Length x Breadth: 124 m X 16 m Gross Tonnage: 4646, DeadWeight: 1540 t Speed recorded (Max / Average): 18 / 13.5 knots Last Known Port: ISTANBUL Tonnage & Dimensions: GT (Gross Tonnage): 4646 NT (Net Tonnage): DWT (Deadweight): 1540 Displacement: 5710 LOA (Length Overall): 136 Beam: 53 ft (16 m) Draft (max): 20 ft (6.1 m) Depth: Height: 52 ft (16 m) Length: 408 ft (124 m) waterline; 446 ft (136 m) - stern to bowsprit History: Named for an African swan living in the Indian Ocean, the ship was designed by Gibbs & Cox in 1931 for American heiress Emily Roebling Cadwallader, granddaughter of John A. Roebling, engineer of the Brooklyn Bridge. The ship was built by Blohm & Voss in Hamburg, Germany. She cost about $4 million ($57 million in 2010 dollars). Equipped with Sperry gyro-stabilizers, she was described in 1949 by Jane's Fighting Ships as "probably the most sumptuously fitted yacht afloat." In 1938, the Turkish government bought the yacht for ailing leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who spent only six weeks aboard before dying a few months later. Throughout World War II, the ship lay idle in Kanlıca Bay on the Bosporus. In 1951, she was converted to the training ship Güneş Dil (English: Sun Language). In October 1979, the ship was gutted by fire at the Turkish Naval Academy off Heybeliada Island in the Sea of Marmara. She lay virtually abandoned for ten years. In 1989, she was chartered for 49 years by Turkish businessman Kahraman Sadıkoğlu. Over three years, his firm completely refurbished her for about $45 million, removing the original steam turbine engines and installing modern diesel engines. The ship was rebuilt at Tuzla Shipyards in Tuzla, a suburb of Istanbul, for the purpose of serving famous and important guests and helping to keep the memory of Atatürk alive. On 28 September 2010 teams of the gendarmerie raided the yacht with assistance of the coast guard and in other places across the country eight persons were arrested for organized human trafficking and detained of 15 women and six foreigner male guests aboard for prostitution. The yacht was rented by a Kazakh businessman three days before in Bodrum for one week and was en route Antalya, said the yacht's operator, Kahraman Sadıkoğlu. Yusuf Hakkı Doğan, a public prosecutor in Antalya, who conducted the operation, revealed that the yacht had been used twice for prostitution purposes, the first time in Bodrum. On the 30th of September 2010, the lease on the MV Savarona was revoked and it reverted to the Turkish Republic as a State Yacht. Features: Savarona features a swimming pool, a turkish bath, a 282-foot (86 m) gold-trimmed grand staircase that survived from her original construction, a movie theater, and a library suite dedicated to Atatürk, which is furnished with many of his personal artifacts. Under its charter operator the yacht was available for charter including the crew but not provisions. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

[99] 19/08/2019 - Dernière modification le 19/09/2019 The story: "The questions came crowding in me: Who was this strange music lover, amateur works of Dragan? And why did he behave so so weird?" In the village of Ardolaz somewhere in the Valais Alps, Sir Melvin Woodworth is in pursuit of a remember, the shadow of his brother Dragan, pianist in the middle of the mountains. He heards one night a melody played on the piano of the decrepit abandoned hotel. An avalanche is going to destroy the village and the population is evacuated. Alone in the abandoned village, he must understand the past to build the future. Source: COSEY, A la recherche de Peter Pan, Editions du Lombard, 1984, "histoires et légendes" The abandoned hotel The Montesano, Arveyes hotel perched on the plateau of Villars, has seen the beautiful world. Built in 1914, the property is responsible for the care of tuberculosis patients, but it soon turns into a hotel. In 1925, he spent 20 to 60 rooms. In the 60s, the hotel became famous for its theme evenings, nights like Brazilian, jazz, African ... the main lounge and bar welcome the stars but also the regional dish. The fate of this hotel goes dark in the late 90s, when it is landing in the hands of the Cantonal Bank of Vaud (BCV). It therefore passes from hand to hand, without finding an owner willing to take the huge renovation that the building needs. Gradually, the squatters invaded the stage. One night a caravan from even smoke in the parking lot. The town, for safety reasons, access is looping. "But we went there as in a mill," says an inhabitant of Villars. Disappears furniture: objects of significant size, requiring the organization. Many people are certain that organized gangs are at work. A bay window is thus carried away, like pieces of flooring. One evening in April 2008, at 3 am, the alarm is raised. The rundown is on fire. It will take just over 12 hours to ensure that the fire is under control. The property is destroyed and the population does not believe in accidents. It was demolished a few months later.

• Antonov An-24 cockpit
    https://www.gaudry.be > Photo > Galerie
[103] 25/09/2019 - Dernière modification le 07/10/2019 The Antonov An-24 (Ukrainian: Антонов Ан-24) (NATO reporting name: Coke) is a 44-seat twin turboprop transport/passenger aircraft designed in 1957 and manufactured in the Soviet Union by the Antonov Design Bureau. Design and development First flown in 1959, over 1,000 An-24s were built and 880 are still in service worldwide, mostly in the CIS and Africa, with a total of 297 Antonov An-24 aircraft in airline service, as of May 2010. It was designed to replace the veteran piston Ilyushin Il-14 transport on short to medium haul trips, optimised for operating from rough strips and unprepared airports in remote locations. The high-wing layout protects engines and blades from debris, the power-to-weight ratio is higher than that of many comparable aircraft and the machine is rugged, requiring minimal ground support equipment. Due to its rugged airframe and good performance, the An-24 was adapted to carry out many secondary missions such as ice reconnaissance and engine/propeller test-bed, as well as further development to produce the An-26 tactical transport, An-30 photo-mapping/survey aircraft and An-32 tactical transport with more powerful engines. Various projects were envisaged such as a four jet short/medium haul airliner and various iterations of powerplant. The main production line was at the Kiev-Svyatoshino (now "Aviant") aircraft production plant which built 985, with 180 built at Ulan Ude and a further 197 An-24T tactical transport/freighters at Irkutsk. Production in the USSR was shut down by 1978. Production continues at China's Xi'an Aircraft Industrial Corporation which makes licenced, reverse-engineered and redesigned aircraft as the Xian [Yunshuji] Y7, and its derivatives. Manufacture of the Y7, in civil form, has now been supplanted by the MA60 derivative with western engines and avionics, to improve performance and economy, and widen the export appeal. • Aero L-29 Delfin
    https://www.gaudry.be > Photo > Galerie
[104] 30/09/2019 - Dernière modification le 10/10/2019 The Aero L-29 Delfín (English: Dolphin, NATO reporting name: Maya) is a military jet trainer aircraft that became the standard jet trainer for the air forces of Warsaw Pact nations in the 1960s. It was Czechoslovakia's first locally designed and built jet aircraft. The Delfin served in basic, intermediate and weapons training roles. For this latter mission, they were equipped with hardpoints to carry gunpods, bombs or rockets, and thus armed, Egyptian L-29s were sent into combat against Israeli tanks during the Yom Kippur War. The L-29 was supplanted in the inventory of many of its operators by the Aero L-39 Albatros. More than 2,000 L-29s were supplied to the Soviet Air Force, acquiring the NATO reporting name "Maya." L-29's, along with the newer L-39,were used extensively in ground attack missions in the Nagorno-Karabakh War by Azeri forces. At least 14 were shot down by Armenian air-defences. As a trainer, the L-29 enabled air forces to adopt an "all-through" training on jet aircraft, replacing earlier piston-engined types. On July 16, 1975, a Czechoslovak Air Force L-29 shot down a Polish civilian biplane piloted by Dionizy Bielański that was attempting to defect to the West. On October 2, 2007, an unmodified L-29 was used for the world’s first jet flight powered solely by 100% biodiesel fuel. Pilots Carol Sugars and Douglas Rodante flew their Delphin Jet from Stead Airport, Reno, Nevada to Leesburg International Airport, Leesburg, Florida in order to promote environmentally friendly fuels in aviation. Between September 10–14, 2008, two L-29s took first and second at the Reno Air Races. Both L-29s consistently posted laps at or above 500 miles per hour. Former Astronaut Curt Brown took first in "Viper," followed by Red Bull Racer Mike Mangold in "Euroburner." Russia says it destroyed 2 Georgian L-29s during the 2008 South Ossetia war.

• Jagdpanzer Kanone Jpz 4-53
    https://www.gaudry.be > Photo > Galerie
[107] 20/09/2019 - Dernière modification le 05/10/2019 Kanonenjagdpanzer The Kanonenjagdpanzer 4 - 5 (also known as Jagdpanzer Kanone 90mm, or tank destroyer, gun) was a German Cold War tank destroyer equipped with a 90mm anti-tank gun from obsolete M47 Patton tanks. Its design was very similar to that of the World War II Jagdpanzer IV. History The first prototypes of the Kanonenjagdpanzer were built in 1960 by Hanomag and Henschel for West Germany and by MOWAG for Switzerland. Hanomag and Henschel continued to produce prototypes, until between 1966 and 1967, 770 were built for the Bundeswehr, 385 by Hanomag and 385 by Henschel. Eighty of them were delivered to Belgium from April 1975 onward. When the Soviets began deploying their T-64 and T-72 main battle tanks, the 90 mm gun wasn't capable of ensuring long-range combat and the Kanonenjagdpanzer became obsolete. Although the producers claimed it could be rearmed with a 105 mm gun, between 1983 and 1985, 163 of these tank destroyers were converted into Raketenjagdpanzer Jaguar 2 anti-tank guided missile carriers by removing the gun, adding a roof-mounted TOW missile launcher and fastening further spaced and perforated armour on the hull. Some others were refitted by removing the main gun into artillery observation vehicles, so called Beobachtungspanzer, which served most particularly in the mortar units. Some Kanonenjagdpanzer remained into service with the Heimatschutztruppe until 1990. Design The Kanonenjagdpanzer was a highly mobile vehicle, its survivability based on its mobility and its low profile. Its hull consisted of welded steel, which had a maximum thickness of only 50 mm. It carried a crew of four, a commander, driver, gunner and a loader. Since the Kanonenjagdpanzer followed the casemate design of most World War II tank destroyers, the gun was fixed within the casemate, located a little right from the center. The 90 mm gun could only traverse 15° to the sides and elevate from -8° to +15°. It carried 51 90 mm rounds for the main gun and 4000 7,62 mm rounds for the two MG3s. The Kanonenjagdpanzer had NBC protection and night-fighting ability. Source : Wikipedia In the left background, we can see a GFM cloche made by Cockerill in the year 1935. It was a fixed and non-retractable firing position made of a 20 tons thick iron casting which shielded its occupant. GFM is an acronym for Guetteur et Fusil-Mitrailleur, (lookout and rifle-machine-gunner), which describes its purpose as a lookout and firing position for light weapons.

[108] 03/08/2013 - Dernière modification le 10/10/2019 The original 50 cm statuette of the Little Princess (Kiskirálylány) statue sitting on the railings of the Danube promenade in Budapest, Hungary was created by László Marton (1925-2008) Munkácsy- and Kossuth Prize-winning sculptor in 1972. The artist was inspired by his eldest daughter born from his first marriage. She often played in the Tabán wearing a princess costume and a crown made out of newspaper by her father, and at home as well, pretending her bathrobes were a mantle. This image prompted her father, the artist in the creation of this little statue. László Marton writes: " Évike born from my first marriage, at the age of 5, was playing in a little princess costume in the Tabán playground. When I saw it, I immediately had the subject matter. Titled "Little Princess" I sculpted it as well. It was placed in an elegant location on the Danube promenade. Became a symbol of Budapest." "I modeled it after my own daughter - says László Marton in his studio (2007) - she was maybe six years old and playing in the garden. She dressed as a princess: laid a bathrobe on her shoulders and put a crown on her head. I managed to capture this moment and immediately felt that this was a successful work of art. Years later, the capital requested a statue from me. I immediately thought of the "Little Princess" and luckily we managed to find the place where the statue feels good." A larger size copy of this statue was placed on the Danube promenade in 1990, and a second copy in Tapolca, the artist's hometown. A copy of the same statue stands in Japan too - donated by the artist - in front of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space cultural center's concert hall. The original statuette (1972) is owned by Hungarian National Gallery. Source: Wikipedia The picture is very badly framed. I wished to have the statue to the left of the image and the Buda Castle on the right. This would have further expanded in the direction of the gaze of the statue, but I had to right a very large group of tourists who had decided to camp on site and jen did not have time to wait for them to leave .

  • Cellulose acetate film (Sicherheitsfilm)
    https://www.gaudry.be > Photo > Galerie
[109] 06/09/2019 - Dernière modification le 28/09/2019 Cellulose acetate film, or safety film, is used in photography as a base material for photographic emulsions. It was introduced in the early 20th century by film manufacturers as a safe film base replacement for unstable and highly flammable nitrate film. Beginning with cellulose diacetate in 1909, this innovation continued with cellulose acetate propionate and cellulose acetate butyrate in the 1930s, and finally in the late 1940s, cellulose triacetate was introduced, alongside polyester bases. These less flammable substitutes for nitrate film were called safety film. The motion picture industry continued to use cellulose nitrate supports until the introduction of cellulose triacetate in 1948, which met the rigorous safety and performance standards set by the cinematographic industry. The chemical instability of cellulose nitrate material, unrecognized at the time of its introduction, has since become a major threat for film collections. Decay and the "vinegar syndrome" The first instance of cellulose triacetate degradation was reported to the Eastman Kodak Company within a decade of its introduction in 1948. The first report came from the Government of India, whose film was stored in hot, humid conditions. It was followed by further reports of degradation from collections stored in similar conditions. These observations resulted in continuing studies in the Kodak laboratories during the 1960s. Beginning in the 1980s, there was a great deal of focus upon film stability following frequent reports of cellulose triacetate degradation. This material releases acetic acid, the key ingredient in vinegar and responsible for its acidic smell. The problem became known as the "vinegar syndrome." Source: Wikipedia

Artist: Ivo Schoofs Location: Stationsplein About the project: Think maths and physics are boring? The Large Pendulum Wave proves the opposite! This installation – almost seven metres high – is proof that mathematical and physical principles are able to generate superbly lyrical images. Large Pendulum Wave consists of a frame to which fifteen pendulums are attached, each culminating in an illuminated sphere. The pendulums are of different lengths, generating random patterns. Continuous waves become groups of pendulums ‘dancing’ at different tempos, which eventually descend into an apparent chaos. A little later, and the spheres suddenly seem to resume an orderly, harmonious pattern. Not only the movement of the spheres, but the colour of their light, changes with an extraordinary sequencing. Together, the movements offer a dazzling spectacle. Ivo Schoofs and his team aim to bring science closer to the general public, with installations based on familiar phenomena and that are a delight to the eye. Source: gloweindhoven

Artist: Yoav Chomsky and Nisan Gelbard Location: Clausplein About the project: Yoav Chomsky grew up in rural Israel, among orchards and wide fields. The beauty of nature never ceases to amaze him, and the continuous change that goes hand in hand with growth, decay and the cycle of the seasons. These experiences defined his work as an artist. During GLOW, he presents Zinorot, a work that premiered last year in Jerusalem. Thousands of slender light threads are attached to an ingenious construction of metal tubes. Together they form a tree that has scrabbled its way out of the earth to reach a towering six meters in height. The lights are programmed to illuminate different parts of the tree in random sequence, making the branches appear to move, reaching upward towards another part of the heavens. The changing lighting is precisely in sync with the rhythm of the accompanying music, creating a breath-taking visual display, with an ever-changing chromatic spectrum. Source: gloweindhoven

[116] 12/11/2014 - Dernière modification le 27/09/2019 Probably, Definitely, Maybe We live in an uncertain world and we deal with this by considering possibilities and probabilities; from what movies you might be interested in to what diseases you might have given your symptoms. Without realising it people interact with systems that utilise probability on a daily basis. But what is probability, how to we measure and work with it? Given the wealth of big data collected how can we use that to predict the future? What if there is noise in the data? What if the data changes over time? To answer these questions we start with the fundamentals of probability theory before looking Bayesian systems (frequently a key part of recommendation and expert systems), Markov chains (useful in predicting human behaviour), and dynamic Bayesian networks (such as Kalman filters and hidden Markov chains which are often used in real-time systems like auto-pilot navigation). Along the way we'll try to demonstrate the mathematics using simple Java/Groovy examples. No knowledge of advanced mathematics is required! Source: DEVOXX

  • Coucher de soleil sur le Roque Cinchado
    https://www.gaudry.be > Photo > Galerie
