La couche transport du modèle OSI
La couche de transport utilise les services de la couche réseau, et fournit des services à la couche session par le reassemblage des données en un flot. Elle s'occupe aussi inversément de la segmentation des flots de données.
Nous sommes ici à la frontière entre les couches application, présentation et session qui ont trait aux applications, et les trois couches réseau, session et physique qui se rapportent au transport des données.
La couche transport protège les couches supérieures des détails du transport. En fournissant un service fiable, la couche de transport procure des mécanismes permettant l'établissement, la maintenance et la terminaison ordonnée des circuits virtuels, la détection et la reprise en cas d'incident ainsi que le contrôle du flux d'information, afin d'empêcher qu'un système surcharge de données ( overflow ) un autre système.
Type de protocole de couche transport : protocole TCP de la suite TCP/IP.
