- Système de codage créé en 1998, Unicode est utilisé dans les standards récents (XML, Java ...) et spécifie un nombre unique pour chaque caractère, quels que soient la plate-forme, le logiciel et la langue utilisés.
Alors que l'ASCII étendu à 8 bits pouvait prendre en compte un maximum de 256 caractères, Unicode traduit chaque caractère en 16 bits et peut donc prendre en compte 65.535 caractères uniques, et traiter informatiquement tous les systèmes d'écriture de la planète (symboles mathématiques, arabe, japonais ...).
Trois autres codages permettent de manipuler les caractères: UTF8 (codage sur un ou plusieurs octets), UTF16(codage sur 2 ou 4 octets) et UTF32 (codage sur 4 octets).
