Située à 56 km au sud-est de la ville de Buenos Aires, elle est souvent surnommée la ville des Diagonales, ou plus rarement, la ville des Tilleuls.
La Plata couvre une superficie de 27i km2 avec une population de 193,144i habitants (2010), soit densité de 7,153.48i habitants par Km2.
